Leading & Managing Holistically >Part 4 >Chapter 12 >Step 1: Managing Organization Change

[Solution] Step 1: Managing Organization Change

Created at:

Author: Emily Carter

To implement organization change effectively, a manager must carry out the change in a systematic manner, following the steps of a process shown to help organizations change effectively.

Steps in the Change Process: The Lewin Model

Several models of organization change have been proposed. The Lewin model describes change as having three steps:

  1. In unfreezing, people recognize why the change is needed.
  2. The change is implemented.
  3. In refreezing, the organization reinforces the change so that it persists.

This model can also describe change on the personal level. For example, Luis gets poor grades on his midterm exams. He decides that he needs to study more in order to get better grades on his finals (unfreezing). He makes a new study schedule and reduces the amount of time he spends playing games online (change). The plan works, and Luis does well on his final exams. To maintain his new study habits, he prints out his grade report and posts it on the inside of his door as a reminder that his sacrifice will pay off (refreezing).

Match each step in the Lewin model of change with the order in which it occurs.

The Lewin model describes the change process in three steps

According to the seven-step comprehensive model of change, which steps should a manager perform after diagnosing the relevant variables? Check all that apply.

  • Implement the change.
  • Recognize the need for change.
  • Plan for the implementation of the change.
  • Refreeze the organization.
  • Select an appropriate change technique.

Diagnosing the relevant variables is the third step in the comprehensive model of change. The seven steps are:

  1. Recognize the need for change.
  2. Establish goals for the change.
  3. Diagnose the relevant variables.
  4. Select an appropriate change technique.
  5. Plan for implementation of the change.
  6. Implement the change.
  7. Evaluate the change and follow up.

Unfreezing the organization so that it can change is the first step of the Lewin model of change; it corresponds roughly to steps 1 to 4 of the comprehensive model.
