[Solution] Reinforcement Perspectives on Motivation

Author: Sarah Bennett
Reinforcement perspectives focus on how rewards cause people to either continue to do what they've been doing or to change their behavior. According to reinforcement theory, people tend to repeat behavior that is rewarded, and they tend to stop a behavior that results in negative consequences.
Types of Reinforcement
Behavior Strengtheners:
- Positive reinforcement: Rewards or positive outcomes after performing a behavior
- Avoidance: Escaping negative consequences through desired behavior
Behavior Weakeners:
- Punishment: Imposing negative consequences for undesired behavior
- Extinction: Ignoring unwanted behavior to eliminate it
Match each example with its type of reinforcement:
Doing a job well so as not to be transferred to a lower-level job
Being praised by the boss after filling in for a sick coworker
Receiving a written warning for arguing with a customer
Being ignored by the boss after sending several dozen emails
Match each example with its reinforcement schedule:
Receiving a complimentary note when manager notices positive customer interaction
Receiving a cafeteria coupon after every 20 sales calls
Being thanked by the boss at every weekly team meeting
Receiving a bonus after every third, fifth, or seventh sale, at random
