Author: Emily Carter

Stress is a fact of life, one that people often complain about. Stress can inspire high performance, or it can be exhausting and demoralizing. Managers who understand the way that stress impacts their own behavior and that of others can manage themselves and their team more effectively.

The General Adaptation Syndrome

Stress is a person's response to a strong stimulus. This stimulus is called a stressor. Stress generally follows a cycle referred to as the general adaptation syndrome (GAS):

  • Stage 1: Alarm. When an individual first experiences a stressor, they often feel negative emotions.
  • Stage 2: Resistance. Usually, people become energized as they seek to confront and control the stressful situation.
  • Stage 3: Exhaustion. If someone feels they cannot handle the stressful circumstance, they eventually give up.

What is the name of the stage experienced by someone immediately after a stressful event?

Match each common cause of workplace stress with the corresponding category of stressor:

Having to make high-stakes decisions

Working in very hot weather

Trying to meet expectations when they have not been communicated

Dealing with coworkers with different personalities

Which of the following are potential negative consequences of stress for organizations? Check all that apply.
